Yup, removing toilets can make everyone edgy!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here are 9<strong>\u00a0questions<\/strong>\u00a0to help you assess your feedback expertise:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Do you\u00a0<strong>avoid giving feedback<\/strong>\u00a0because it is uncomfortable?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Do you avoid giving feedback because you think it takes<strong>\u00a0too much time<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Do you avoid giving feedback\u00a0<strong>for any other reason?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Do you mainly give\u00a0<strong>constructive feedback<\/strong>and not positive feedback?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Do you mainly give\u00a0<strong>positive feedback<\/strong>\u00a0and not constructive feedback?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Do you\u00a0<strong>actively solicit feedback<\/strong>\u00a0from those around you?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">7.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0How well do you do\u00a0<strong>RECEIVING feedback<\/strong>(both positive and constructive?)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">8.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Does your team have a\u00a0<strong>structured way<\/strong>\u00a0to give each other\u00a0<strong>consistent<\/strong>\u00a0positive and constructive feedback?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">9.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Does\u00a0<strong>feedback flow all directions<\/strong>\u00a0in your organization, peer to peer as well as direct report to manager and vice versa?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Most of us have room to grow in the feedback department<\/strong>. Luckily a little effort in this area pays off quickly!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here are 3<strong>\u00a0things<\/strong>\u00a0that I have noticed about feedback with teams over the years:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a01.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The more you\u00a0<strong>practice<\/strong>\u00a0at it (both giving and receiving feedback) the more comfortable it gets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The more\u00a0<strong>willing<\/strong>\u00a0you are to give AND receive feedback the more effective you will become.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0If consistent, balanced and\u00a0well-meaningfeedback is\u00a0<strong>incorporated into a team culture<\/strong>, the team becomes more effective, efficient and trusting of each other.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"left\"><strong>Balanced Feedback<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I have to relate this topic to the DiSC personality style training. \u00a0(please see previous blogs on DiSC).\u00a0 If you don\u2019t already know your personality style,\u00a0<a title=\"blog\" href=\"https:\/\/www.transformativetraining.com\/dev\/2013\/04\/\" target=\"_blank\">please see this blog<\/a>. If you do know, this will be a reminder.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For those folk who have a\u00a0<strong>D or C\u00a0<\/strong>as part of your personality style &#8211;<strong>your natural tendency is going to be to focus on what is not working in order to fix it.<\/strong>There are pros and cons to this way of relating to challenges.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">\n<p>The pros are that\u00a0<strong>you often DO fix things and find solutions<\/strong>. The challenge is that you are prone to give mainly constructive feedback and the people who work with you\u00a0<strong>may perceive you as uncaring or intimidating\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; at your worst you might be bullying or standoffish. You may see giving positive feedback as a waste of time &#8211; this is where you probably need to grow.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">\n<p>For those people are who have an\u00a0<strong>I or S\u00a0<\/strong>as part of your personality style &#8211; your natural tendency is to see the positive and\u00a0<strong>build on what is working\u00a0<\/strong>or ask what else is possible. You tend to see the glass as \u201chalf-full.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">\n<p>The benefit to this perspective is that people probably perceive you as being able to relate well to others as you are\u00a0<strong>empathic, understanding, and can see multiple perspectives.\u00a0<\/strong>People who work for you will often feel affirmed and part of a team.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">\n<p>The drawback is that you have a tendency to give mainly positive feedback and\u00a0<strong>avoid constructive feedback\u00a0<\/strong>as unpleasant and conflict producing. You may sweep things under the rug that really\u00a0<strong>need to be addressed\u00a0<\/strong>in order for your team to move forward. \u00a0Your growth edge is to learn how to\u00a0<strong>effectively deliver constructive feedback<\/strong>\u00a0in a way that is honest but not personal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">\n<p>The Formula for Giving Feedback:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ask Permission<\/li>\n<li>State What Happened<\/li>\n<li>Impact<\/li>\n<li>(Request &#8211; for constructive feedback)<\/li>\n<li>(Collaborate &#8211; for constructive feedback)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">\n<p><strong>Ask Permission:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cI wanted to give you some feedback, is now a good time?\u201d\u00a0 This allows the person to get prepared to receive feedback and schedule a better time if necessary. Most people assume that this will be constructive or negative feedback, so it will be a pleasant surprise if it is positive!<\/p>\n<p><strong>State What Happened:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cI really appreciated your comments during the meeting regarding the strategic plan.\u201d Or \u201cYou didn\u2019t finish the report yesterday according to the deadline.\u201d\u00a0 These should be objective, observable actions or behaviors, the way a camera or video would record them. Most people give evaluative feedback based on their own values and judgements that can create conflict. For example, \u201cThis is the last time I am going to accept a late proposal.
