What is Conflict Management? What is Conflict Resolution? What is Mediation?
These are terms that are sometimes used interchangeably to mean “dealing with conflict” but they are actually different approaches to conflict.
Conflict Management is concerned with limiting the negative aspects of conflict and increasing the positive aspects of conflict – such as building relationships, sharing of different opinions, and increasing creativity. The aim of conflict management is not to squash the conflict, but to enhance learning in teams that may be in the storming phase of group development. We embrace the idea that conflict, when properly managed, can be valuable to groups and organizations. We focus on helping you work with the conflict to achieve greater understanding and positive outcomes.
Conflict Resolution is a term borrowed from the legal system and generally means any process established to resolve disputes without trial or violence. In the corporate setting, many use the term conflict resolution because it sounds like there is an ultimate “end” to the conflict. As stated above, in working with organizations we do focus on solution oriented approaches to working with conflict while not trying to avoid or stifle it.
Mediation is a process of facilitating two or more people through conflict to come to agreement on a concrete solution. The term “mediation” broadly refers to any instance in which a third party helps others reach agreement. The mediator acts as a neutral third party and facilitates rather than directs the process. We have a great deal of experience working with an effective facilitated process to help individuals and teams hear, understand and come to agree when working through conflict.
